He initially worked as a public treasury officer, and from 1998 to 2002 he was political advisor to Jean Glavany at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Didier Guillaume was first elected in 1983 as a municipal councillor of his birthplace (Bourg-de-Péage), where he became mayor from 1995 to 2004. Elected General Councillor of the Drôme in 1998, he served as President from 2004 to 2015. In 2008, he was elected senator of the Drôme department and left his mandate as mayor of Bourg-de-Péage to respect the rule relating to cumulative terms. He was President of the Socialist Group at the Senate from 2014 to 2018. He will be Manuel Valls' campaign director in the left-wing primaries of 2017. In 2018, he joined the European Democratic and Social Rally (RDSE) group at the Senate.
